MOLLY MCCALL | ART

ARTIST | MOLLY MCCALL

For the past decade, McCall’s works have been questioning memory and truth behind images and visual representation. Her oeuvre encompasses multiple mediums spanning photography, painting, drawing, and collage with equal agility. Through her works, McCall takes the viewer to poetical, dreamlike and ephemeral worlds filled with myth and the mystery of memory.

In search of motifs and the threads of the human condition that connect them, McCall relies on intuition and curiosity to guide her towards the trove of symbols found within literature, film, poetry, art history, nature, and at times, objects. A wide spectrum of topics and subjects emerge thematically in her works, interweaving literary and historical references with notions crossing the boundaries of time, liminal space, and memory. Subtly, the artist diminishes the lines of the real and the imagined, the past and the present.

McCall’s wide-ranging series depict still lives, portraits and landscapes that are influenced by other artists such as Henri Matisse, Joseph Cornell, JMW Turner, Caspar David Friedrich; authors and poets like Jorge Luis Borges, Virginia Woolf, Rumi, W.B Yeats, and Robinson Jeffers and filmmakers William Wyler or James Ivory. Memory, fragility, and the natural world are all recurrent themes as seen in her latest series “Forgive * Forget” from 2024, in which she arranges dispirit objects in a “left to right” format as if to tell a story with no beginning and no end.
